This rectangular farmhouse-style sink is carved by hand from gray marble quarried in Turkey. It measures 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 6 inches high, and it sits on top of the counter, so the stone basin stays in full view. The size makes it a compact kitchen sink, suited to a prep station, a bar area or a small kitchen where a large basin would take too much counter. The marble carries natural striations, mineral inclusions and shifts of tone across its gray surface, and none of that can be reproduced, so every sink that leaves the workshop is one of a kind.

A polished, rectangular stone basin

The form is simple: a clean rectangle with straight sides and a flat rim, in the spirit of a traditional farmhouse basin, scaled down to 18 by 12 inches. The surface is polished. Polishing gives the gray marble a smooth, reflective face that deepens its color and brings out the lines running through it, and it leaves the inside of the basin easy to rinse, without rough grooves where food or soap can harden. The sink is carved from a single block, so there are no joints or seams in the basin. The gray of the stone is calm and works with both warm and cool kitchens. Its striations and inclusions are not flaws but the natural record of the stone, and the exact pattern, tone and spacing will differ from sink to sink. Moderate color variation between pieces is normal for this marble.

A compact sink for the kitchen

At 18 by 12 inches, this is not a main sink for a large family kitchen. It works best as a second basin: a prep sink on an island, a bar sink beside a beverage fridge, or the only sink in a small kitchen, cottage or studio where every inch of counter counts. The rectangular form suits contemporary, minimalist, transitional and traditional kitchens, and the gray stone pairs well with wood, white cabinetry, brass or matte black hardware. Because it sits on top of the counter, it can often be added during a counter replacement without rebuilding the cabinet below. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain assemblies that connect to a P-trap below.

Set it on a strong counter

This sink installs over the countertop. Solid marble is heavy, so the counter and the cabinet beneath it must be flat, level and strong enough to carry the stone, and the floor below should be sound. A hole is cut in the counter so the drain assembly can pass through and connect to the P-trap, which also helps hold the basin in place, and the sink is set on a bead of silicone. Because the basin stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over the rim: a tall deck-mounted faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Choose the faucet before the counter is cut so the holes line up, and use a professional installer for the weight.

Care

Gray marble is a porous calcite stone with a polished surface. Acidic foods and liquids such as lemon juice, vinegar or wine can etch the polish, and sealing helps keep stains and water out of the stone. How often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
