Bianco Carrara marble, carved as one tub

This freestanding bathtub is hand carved from a single solid block of Bianco Carrara White marble quarried in Turkey. Soft gray veining runs across a white base, and because the tub comes out of one block of natural stone, no two pieces carry the same pattern. It measures 70 inches long, 30 inches wide and 20 inches high, a size that gives room for a full length soak. The walls are 2 to 3 cm of solid marble, thick enough to give the tub real presence in the room and to hold warmth once it is full.

Gray veins on a white field

Bianco Carrara is a quiet white marble. The gray veining is fine and loose rather than bold, so the tub reads as calm and light in a modern, minimal or classic bathroom. The surface is honed to a matte finish that shows the grain clearly and feels soft under the hand. Because the tub is carved from one block with no joints, the veining runs unbroken from the rim down the sides. Moderate variation in tone and veining between tubs is normal for this stone.

A tub for a long soak

At 70 by 30 inches and 20 inches high, this is a full size soaking tub. Freestanding, it can sit in the middle of a primary bathroom, under a window or against a feature wall. Natural stone holds heat once it has warmed, so the water cools slowly. The drain assembly and faucet are sold separately.

Plan the floor and plumbing

A solid marble tub is heavy, and heavier still once it is full of water. A contractor should confirm the floor can carry that load before delivery; on a wood frame floor the joists may need reinforcing. The plumber runs the drain to the 4 cm hole in the tub, and water comes from a floor mounted tub filler or a wall mounted faucet placed before the tub goes in. Professional installation is recommended for leveling, floor support and plumbing alignment.

Care

Bianco Carrara is a calcite marble with a honed surface. Like all marble it is porous, so acidic products can etch it and strong colors in soaps or oils can stain it if they sit. Periodic resealing protects the stone, and how often it is needed depends on how much the tub is used.
