This freestanding bathtub is hand carved from a single solid block of Alexandrette Black marble, quarried in Turkey. It is natural stone throughout, with no reconstructed sections and no surface coating, finished to a honed matte surface. The tub measures 32 inches wide, 72 inches long and 20 inches high, long enough for a full length soak. Along the rim, a tray is carved into the stone to hold a glass, a cup or a book during a long bath.

Alexandrette is a deep black marble with natural veining. The honed matte finish keeps the black soft and even, and it shows fewer water spots and fingerprints than a high gloss would. The integrated tray along the rim is the detail that sets this tub apart from the plain version: a flat ledge carved from the same block, wide enough for a glass of wine, morning coffee or a book. Because the tub and the tray are one piece, there are no joints or glue lines where water could find a way in. Each tub is carved from its own block, so the shade of black and the pattern of veining vary from piece to piece. Moderate variation between tubs is normal for this stone.

A long, warm soak

At 72 inches long and 32 inches wide, with a height of 20 inches, the tub allows full length soaking at a comfortable depth. Natural marble absorbs heat from the water and holds it, so the bath stays warm longer and needs less topping up, and the dense stone does not stay cold for long after the tub is full. As a freestanding piece it can sit in the middle of the bathroom or near a window, with the tray turned toward the side where it is easiest to reach. The tub has a 1.5 inch drain hole, and the walls range from 0.75 to 1.25 inches thick.

Floor, drain and filler

A solid marble tub is heavy, and the floor must carry it when it is full of water and in use, so a contractor should check the structure before delivery. The plumber sets the drain to meet the 1.5 inch opening and runs the supply for a floor mounted filler or a wall mounted faucet; the faucet, overflow and mounting ring are sold separately. The tub ships in a wooden crate. Professional installation is recommended for leveling, the drain connection and safe handling of the stone.

Care

Alexandrette Black is a calcite marble with a honed surface. Like all marble it is porous, so acid based products such as lemon or vinegar can etch it and harsh chemicals can dull the finish. Periodic resealing preserves the stone, and how often it is needed depends on how much the tub is used.
