Calacatta Viola, carved as one tub

This freestanding soaking tub is hand carved from a single block of solid Calacatta Viola marble, quarried in Turkey. Calacatta Viola is a white marble with bold veining in gray and purple tones, and that veining is what gives the tub its character. Carved rather than cast, each tub carries its own pattern, so no two are identical. It measures 34 inches wide, 70 inches long and 26 inches high, and it is polished to a smooth gloss.

The stone has a white ground crossed by strong, organic veins in shades of gray and purple. Polishing brings the colors forward and gives the surface a sleek finish that catches light along the curves. The tub has an oval profile, carved by hand from one block, with no seams, joints or glued sections. Stone workers hand carve and polish each piece, and small differences in color and finish from one tub to the next are part of that work, not flaws. The oval form and bold stone suit minimal, industrial, traditional and contemporary bathrooms alike.

A deep tub for long soaks

At 26 inches high, this is a deep tub, and the 70 by 34 inch footprint leaves room for full body immersion. Marble holds heat: once the stone has warmed, the bath water stays warm for longer, which makes a long soak more comfortable without frequent topping up. The walls range from 0.75 to 1.25 inches thick, and the tub has a 1.5 inch drain hole. Freestanding, it can sit at the center of a primary bathroom or beside a window, where the veining can be seen from every side.

Plan support and plumbing

Solid marble is heavy, and the floor must carry the tub full of water and in use, so a contractor should confirm the structure before delivery. The plumber sets the drain to meet the 1.5 inch opening and plans the supply for a floor mounted tub filler or a wall mounted faucet. Professional installation is recommended for leveling and a clean drain connection.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a calcite marble with a polished surface. Like all marble it is porous, so acidic cleaners can etch it and spills can stain if they sit. Regular sealing protects the stone, and how often it is resealed depends on use. With care, the marble develops a soft patina over the years.
