This handcrafted set of two triangular coffee tables is made from Calacatta Viola marble quarried in Turkey and polished. Calacatta Viola has distinctive purple, burgundy and violet veining in a brecciated pattern, broken into a mosaic of fragments, which sets it apart from marbles with plain white or gray veining. Both tables measure 39 inches wide and 39 inches long; one stands 12 inches high and the other 16 inches high. This is a stone that commands a room rather than blending in, and a set that gives a living room two focal points instead of one. Each table is carved from solid stone, so the pair is never identical.

Triangles in two heights

The triangular design and the dramatic veining make each table a focal point, and the two heights let them overlap and layer instead of sitting side by side as twins. Each table is individually carved from solid natural stone, work that takes specialist equipment, skill and a tolerance for material loss, and the veining on each piece of the pair is different. The veining in Calacatta Viola comes from minerals that moved through the stone as it formed, so no two slabs are identical, and no process can reproduce it. The polished surface reflects light and shows that natural character with a luminous finish. It reads well in contemporary, transitional and traditional rooms, not only in modern ones.

Delivery and setup

Each table is solid marble and heavy, so two or more people should carry each piece and set it in place. The floor needs to be level so the tables sit without rocking, especially where one is placed partly over the other. Felt pads protect wood and tile floors. When the arrangement changes, the tables should be lifted rather than slid, so the edges and the floor stay unmarked.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a porous calcite marble with a polished surface. Acids such as vinegar and lemon can etch the polish, and wine or citrus can stain it if left to sit. Sealing helps the surface resist stains, and how often it is resealed depends on use. With care, the tables age well and gain character over time rather than showing wear.
