This freestanding pedestal sink is carved by hand from Calacatta Viola marble quarried in Turkey. It is a single piece of furniture and plumbing at once: a round basin on a carved column that stands on the floor without a vanity. Each sink is cut from natural stone, so no two are identical, and the veining on one will never match another.

White marble with violet veining

Calacatta Viola has a luminous white background with gray and violet veining that flows across the surface. On a pedestal, that veining runs from the basin down the column, so the whole form shows the stone rather than only a bowl. The finish is polished, which brings out the full depth of the marble and gives it a glossy, light-reflecting surface. A polished face also sheds soap residue more easily than a textured one. The basin has no overflow, which keeps the lines of the form clean, and the curves are gentle all the way from rim to base. Moderate color variation between pieces is normal for this stone. Every marking is a record of how the marble formed, and that is the clearest evidence of a real stone sink.

Freestanding in a small footprint

The sink measures 18 by 18 inches and stands 33 inches tall. As a true pedestal, it needs no wall brackets, no vanity cabinet and no countertop, which gives real freedom in planning the room. The compact footprint leaves floor open around it, so a powder room or guest bath feels larger, while in a spacious primary bath it becomes a sculptural focal point on its own. The white, gray and violet tones sit well next to warm wood, pale plaster or dark tile. A standard 1.5 inch drain fitting connects it to the plumbing below.

A level floor and planned plumbing

A stand-alone sink carries its full weight on the floor, and solid marble is heavy, so the floor must be level and strong enough to support it. Because the pedestal stands on its own, the drain and supply lines come from the wall behind it or up through the floor, and their position should be set before the floor and wall are finished, so the pipes line up with the drain and stay neatly out of sight. With no counter to mount a faucet on, a wall-mounted faucet is the usual choice, and its height and reach are planned to land over the basin. A professional installer is recommended to set the pedestal level and connect the plumbing.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a porous calcite marble, so acids such as vinegar or lemon juice can etch its polished surface. Sealing helps it resist water and stains, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
