This round vessel sink is carved by hand from Calacatta Viola marble quarried in Turkey. The stone combines creamy white tones with dramatic gray and violet veining, and on a 16 inch bowl that veining wraps all the way around the tapered form. A single piece of Calacatta can carry a whole bathroom design, and this sink does the same at vanity scale. Because the veining is natural, each sink is one of a kind, and the variations in color and pattern are the proof that it is real stone.

A matte finish on bold veining

The surface is honed to a soft matte finish rather than glossy. A honed face shows the depth and character of the marble without the glare of a gloss, and it plays down fingerprints and mineral spots. It also hides light etching better than a glossy surface, so the bowl keeps a calm, even look as it is used and does not show every water mark. The sides taper toward the base, which gives the sink a lighter profile on the counter. The rim edges are curved and the interior is smooth, so the bowl drains to the center and leaves no standing water or tight corners to collect dirt. Each sink is shaped by Turkish marble craftsmen using traditional methods, and the way the gray and violet lines fall across the white is different on every piece.

Set on top of the counter

This is an over-countertop sink, which keeps installation simple. There is no undermount cutout: a single drain hole is drilled in the counter to line up with the drain in the bowl. The counter still has to be flat, level and strong, because solid marble is heavy. The bowl is set in a bead of silicone, which holds it in place and seals the joint. Since the rim stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over it, so a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout is needed. Choose the faucet before the counter is drilled, so the faucet hole and the drain line up with the center of the bowl.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a porous calcite marble. Acids such as vinegar or lemon can etch it, although the honed finish masks light etching better than a polish, and in a humid bathroom a sealer helps guard against moisture and stains. How often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
