A 72 inch Carrara White double sink

This double sink is carved by hand from solid Carrara White marble quarried in Turkey. It is 72 inches long, 21 inches wide and 8 inches high, with two rectangular basins and a fluted front. The size answers a simple problem: two people getting ready at the same time. Each basin has its own space, and the long top between them leaves room for both. Like every natural marble, the stone carries its own pattern of veining and colour, so each sink is one of a kind.

Fluting across a long front

The front face is fluted, carved into vertical channels that run the full 72 inches and give the long block a sense of rhythm and depth. Light falling across the flutes picks out each groove, which keeps a large white surface from looking flat. Every surface is polished, so the soft gray veining on the white base shows clearly and the stone has a reflective finish. The two basins have smooth, curved edges that let water run to the drains without pooling. Carrara White has a white to blue-gray background with fine, feathery gray veins, and moderate colour variation across a piece this long is normal.

Two basins for a shared bath

The classic white and gray of Carrara works in modern, transitional and traditional bathrooms alike, with chrome, nickel, brass or black fittings. The fluted front pairs well with plain walls, so the carving carries the design, or with a simple marble or plaster finish around it. Each basin has its own drain hole, listed at 1.5 inches, which fits standard bathroom drain fittings.

Plan the wall for a long stone

The sink is listed for wall mounting or for placing on a vanity. A 72 inch piece of solid marble is very heavy, so wall mounting needs solid blocking between the studs along the full length, set at the mounting height while the wall is open, and brackets sized for the load. Both faucets have to be planned before the wall is closed: wall-mounted faucets need their supply lines and valves roughed in at the right height above each basin. On a vanity, the top must be flat, level and strong enough for the full length of stone. Either way, a professional installer is recommended, and moving the sink is a job for several people.

Care

Carrara White is a calcite marble, and like all marble it is porous: coffee, wine and acidic liquids can etch or stain the polished surface if left to sit. With sealing and care it develops a soft patina over time, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the bathroom is used.
