Toros Black and Carrara White on one pedestal

This freestanding pedestal sink is built from three solid blocks of marble quarried in Turkey: Toros Black for the basin and the base, and Carrara White for the column between them. It stands 36 inches tall on a square 16 by 16 inch footprint, and it is meant for bathrooms where the sink is a piece of architecture rather than plumbing hidden behind cabinet doors. There is no vanity and no countertop. The basin, the column and the base are the whole fixture, and the two-tone contrast comes entirely from the stone itself, with no paint, coating or applied finish. It gives a powder room or a minimalist primary bath a clear focal point.

Black, white, black

The design is a stack of three blocks. Toros Black marble forms the basin at the top and the base on the floor, and a Carrara White marble column runs through the center. The dark stone frames the light middle section, so the eye reads the sink from top to bottom as one sculptural form rather than a basin on a stand. Each block is cut and finished individually by hand. The interior of the basin and the top surface are polished, giving a smooth, easy surface where water runs. The exterior is left rough, a textured hand-worked face that contrasts with the polished top and shows the grain of the stone up close. Because every sink is assembled from three separate blocks of natural marble, no two share the same grain, vein placement or color shifts. Moderate variation between pieces is normal.

A square sink for compact rooms

The square 16 inch footprint takes up very little floor, which makes this sink a strong choice for powder rooms and small bathrooms where a vanity would crowd the room. Without cabinetry, the floor stays visible on all sides, the sightlines stay open and the room feels lighter. At 36 inches tall, the basin sits at a comfortable working height. The square form suits contemporary bathrooms in a way a rounded pedestal does not, and the natural stone keeps it from feeling cold. It belongs in rooms built around a few deliberate materials: brass or matte black wall-mounted fittings, concrete, plaster or limestone walls, and natural light. The basin has a 4 cm drain hole for standard plumbing and no overflow.

Plan the floor and the wall

A stand-alone marble pedestal is heavy, and all of that weight rests on a 16 by 16 inch base. The floor under it must be level and strong enough to carry solid stone. The drain and supply lines can come up through the floor or out of the wall behind the sink, and their position should be set to the center of the basin before the finished floor and wall go in. The sink has no faucet deck, so it needs a wall-mounted faucet: the valve and the spout height are best decided early, while the wall is still open. A professional installer is recommended, both to handle the weight of the three blocks safely and to line up the drain and supply lines cleanly.

Care

Toros Black and Carrara White are calcite marbles, porous stones that acidic liquids such as vinegar or lemon juice can etch. The sink is sealed during production, a further sealing at installation adds protection, and how often it is resealed after that depends on how much the bathroom is used.
