Calacatta Viola, a compact wall-hung sink

This rectangular wall-hung sink is carved from a single block of Calacatta Viola marble quarried in Turkey. The stone is white and gray, and its veining gives the small piece real depth. It measures 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 7 inches high, a compact footprint with a sculptural presence that does not overwhelm a small room. Each sink is cut from its own block, so no two are identical.

A honed face with soft edges

The finish is honed, a subtle matte surface that grows more attractive with age rather than needing to be kept glossy. Water spots and minor marks blend into a honed face instead of standing out, which makes it more forgiving day to day than a glossy one. The construction is solid, carved from one block with no seams where water could get in and no joints to weaken over time. Curved edges and smooth detailing keep soap and debris from collecting in awkward corners. Moderate colour variation between sinks is normal for this marble, and many people who live with marble come to see light etching as part of its patina, much as leather or hardwood floors take on character with use.

Small rooms, big presence

At 18 by 12 inches, this sink fits where a full vanity would not: a narrow powder room, a guest bath, or a corner of a primary suite where a second basin is useful. Hung on the wall, it leaves the floor open and becomes the focal point of the room. The white and gray marble sits well in a minimalist modern bathroom and in a spa-like room with wood and soft lighting. The 7 inch height gives a usable basin depth for such a compact sink. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings, and the faucet is usually mounted on the wall above the basin.

Brackets and blocking first

This is a wall-hung sink, and even a compact block of marble is heavy. It needs sturdy wall brackets, which are sold separately, fixed into blocking between the studs at the mounting height. Blocking is easiest to add while the wall is open. Plan the faucet at the same time: with no deck to mount on, a wall-mounted faucet is the usual choice, so the supply lines should be placed in the wall at the right height above the basin. A professional installer is recommended for the weight and so the drain and supply lines line up cleanly.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a calcite marble with a honed surface, a porous stone that acids such as vinegar can permanently etch. Sealing helps prevent deep staining, and how often it is resealed depends on use, typically every several months to a year.
