This is a honed limestone mosaic on a 12x12 sheet, arranged as a basket weave: pairs of bars turned against each other around a small square. Each sheet covers a square foot and a box holds six.

A pattern with a long history

Basket weave has been laid for well over a century, which is part of why it reads as settled rather than fashionable. Limestone suits it, since the stone carries an even texture with small fossil traces and less contrast than marble, letting the geometry lead. Variation between pieces is moderate, so tone shifts across a floor. Honing leaves the surface matte, which hides wear better than a polished face would. The small square at the centre of each pair is what separates a true basket weave from a windmill pattern, and it repeats across every sheet.

  • Geometry first A quiet stone keeps attention on the weave rather than on veining.
  • Matte finish Honing hides scratching and etching better than polishing.

Floors and walls, home or commercial

The rating is broad: residential and commercial interior floors and walls, with kitchen, bathroom and living room all recorded. One sheet covers a square foot, a box six, so 60 square feet needs 12 boxes with waste included. Matching trims exist as a 1/2x12 pencil liner and a 2x12 andorra, and the same stone comes as an 11x17 sheet. Because tone varies moderately from piece to piece, opening several boxes and mixing them during setting keeps the spread even.

  • Twelve boxes Sixty square feet at six square feet a box, plus 15 percent.
  • Trims to finish Pencil liner and andorra profiles share this limestone.

Why we chose it

  • Broad rating Commercial and residential, floors and walls, all appear in the listing.
  • Even arithmetic A sheet covers exactly one square foot.
  • Settled pattern Basket weave has outlasted most tile fashions.

Care

Limestone is porous and needs a penetrating sealer after installation, then resealing every one to two years in damp areas. Acids etch it quickly, so clean with a pH neutral stone product and avoid vinegar and citrus.
