A gray travertine pedestal sink

This pedestal sink is carved by hand from solid blocks of gray travertine quarried in Turkey. It stands on its own, 18 inches wide, 18 inches long and 33 inches high, with a basin inspired by the shape of a hearth. The form is strong enough to anchor a bathroom but in proportion with the room, so it does not overwhelm it. Every piece is made from natural stone, with colour variations and veining that differ from sink to sink.

A hearth-shaped basin on a column

The basin takes its outline from a hearth, set on a square pedestal that carries the stone down to the floor. Both are solid travertine, carved from natural blocks. The finish is honed on the inside and outside: a smooth, matte surface that shows fewer water spots than a glossy one and gives the gray stone a soft, quiet look. The colour variations and natural veining that run through each piece are the clearest sign that it is real stone, and moderate variation between sinks is normal.

One piece, from floor to rim

A pedestal sink clears the floor around it, which makes a bathroom feel larger, and the column hides the plumbing behind an architectural form. The hearth silhouette works in modern, contemporary, traditional and transitional bathrooms. The gray tones sit well beside white marble, dark wood, plaster and matte black or aged brass fittings. The sink has a 1.5 inch drain hole and a 4 inch hole at the back for the pipe.

A strong, level floor

This is a stand-alone sink, so the floor carries all of its weight. Solid travertine at this height is very heavy, and the floor must be level and strong enough to support it. The drain runs through the 4 inch opening at the back, so plumbing can come from the wall behind the pedestal. Because the basin is fixed at 33 inches high, plan a wall-mounted faucet or a faucet that suits the rim, and rough in the supply lines to match. A professional installer is recommended, and moving the sink takes several people.

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 18 inch square honed pedestal. Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acids such as vinegar or citrus can etch the honed surface. Sealing keeps water and stains from soaking in, and how often it is resealed depends on use.
