A travertine apron sink for the kitchen

This apron-front farmhouse sink is cut from dense beige travertine quarried in Turkey and finished by hand. It measures 30 inches long, 18 inches wide and 10 inches high, with walls 2 to 3 cm thick. The honed surface keeps the natural color and texture of the stone in view instead of hiding it, so each sink shows its own veining and tonal depth. It is made for the kitchen, where a deep, wide basin is used every day.

Honed and filled travertine

The sink is honed and filled on both the interior and the exterior. Honing gives the travertine a smooth, matte surface with a warm, soft look,. Travertine forms with small natural pits, and on this sink they are filled during production with a color-matched filler, so the surface is closed and even while the stone still reads as natural. The basin is curved, with smooth, rounded edges, which leaves no sharp inside corners where food debris can collect. The beige tone and organic texture run through the whole piece rather than sitting on the surface, so light wear over the years blends into the stone and becomes part of its patina. Because each sink is cut from its own block, the veining, pitting pattern and shade vary from piece to piece, and moderate color variation is normal for this stone.

Sized for real kitchen work

At 30 inches long and 10 inches high, the basin has room for large pots, baking sheets and stockpots, so washing up does not mean working around the sink. The apron front faces into the room and becomes a finished part of the cabinetry rather than an opening in the counter. The neutral beige and organic texture suit modern farmhouse, transitional, traditional and contemporary kitchens, and the stone sits well against dark cabinetry as well as light painted finishes. The 6.5 cm drain hole takes standard kitchen drain connections without modification. The sink is made without an overflow ring, so there is no hidden channel where water can sit.

Build the base around the sink

This sink installs above the counter line, resting on the sink base with its apron facing forward. Because solid travertine is heavy, the cabinet or frame under it must be level, square and built to carry the stone, and it is easiest to size the base to the sink once the sink is on site. A drain opening is planned to line up with the 6.5 cm drain, and the sink is bedded in silicone. Plan the faucet at the same time: It can be mounted on the counter behind the sink or on the wall above it, and the faucet must reach the middle of a 30 inch basin. A professional installer is recommended.

This farmhouse sink is made to order on two schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, and the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice for a kitchen that is still being built. Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acids such as vinegar, citrus or tomato can etch the honed surface, and sealing slows how quickly moisture and stains soak in. The filled areas are part of the finished sink and need no separate treatment. How often the stone is resealed depends on how hard the kitchen is used.
