This round vessel sink is carved by hand from light beige travertine quarried in Turkey. It measures 16 inches wide, 16 inches long and 6 inches high, a compact bowl that sits on top of the vanity. Each piece is carved individually, so no two sinks carry the same veining or surface character, and the warmth and depth of the stone come from the travertine itself. The sink is shaped from one piece of stone and finished by hand, with no seams and no joints.

Honed, filled and gently curved

The finish is honed and filled. Filling deals with travertine's main practical weakness, the natural cavities in the stone: once they are filled, debris has nowhere to settle into the surface, and the sink needs far less attention than unfilled travertine. Honing gives a matte face that holds less dirt and hides water spots and etch marks better than a glossy finish would, an advantage that adds up over years of daily use. Inside, the sides slope gently into a curved bowl, so water does not pool in corners and the basin is quick to clean. The rounded rim continues the soft outline of the bowl. As with all travertine, the tone and markings of each sink will differ a little from the next.

A compact bowl on the vanity

Set directly on the vanity, the bowl needs no undermount cutout, only a hole for the drain. At 16 inches across, it suits a powder room or a narrow vanity, and it is still roomy enough for a primary bath. Its raised position and light beige color make it a quiet focal point in minimal, transitional and contemporary bathrooms, against wood, plaster or painted cabinets. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain connections. Because the bowl is round and compact, it leaves room on the counter for a soap dish or a tray beside it.

Set it on a flat counter

Solid travertine is heavy, so the counter must be flat, level and strong. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone so it sits firmly and evenly. Because the sink stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet must reach over the rim: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Choose the faucet before the counter is drilled so its height and reach match the bowl.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acids such as vinegar can etch it, though a honed face makes etch marks less visible. Filling and sealing reduce the paths for staining, and how often the sink is resealed depends on use.
