Walnut travertine, an oval honed vessel

This oval vessel sink is carved individually from Walnut travertine quarried in Turkey. It measures 21 inches long, 17 inches wide and 6 inches high, a generous basin that still sits comfortably on a typical bathroom counter. The stone has warm, light beige tones with natural variation in color depth and texture, so each sink carries its own character. The surface is honed and filled, and the overall feel is Mediterranean: warm, earthy and handmade.

Honed, filled and satin-smooth

Travertine forms with small natural cavities. On this sink they are filled with a color-matched filler, which closes the surface, reduces how much water the stone takes in and keeps the texture of the travertine visible. The stone is then honed to a smooth, satin-like finish that sits between a glossy polish and raw stone: warm to look at, comfortable under the fingertips, and less slippery than a shiny surface. The oval shape is soft and continuous, with no corners. Because the color and texture run through the whole stone rather than sitting on the surface, light wear blends in instead of exposing a different color underneath. The basin has no overflow hole. Moderate color variation between pieces is normal for travertine, so the tone and texture of each sink will differ a little.

The light beige of Walnut travertine works across modern, contemporary, traditional and transitional bathrooms, and it is not tied to one look. It sits easily on wood, painted or stone vanities and pairs with brass, bronze, nickel or black faucets. At 21 by 17 inches, the oval basin gives enough room for real washing without splashing and still fits on a standard counter, from a powder room to a primary bath. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings, and since the basin has no overflow, a drain without an overflow port is the right choice.

Set it on a level counter

This sink installs over the countertop. Solid travertine is heavy, so the counter must be flat, level and strong. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the basin is set in a bead of silicone. Because it stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over the rim: a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Choose the faucet and drain before the counter is cut so the holes and supply lines line up.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone. The filled, honed surface reduces water absorption, but acids such as vinegar or lemon can etch it, and resealing keeps it protected. How often it is resealed depends on use, typically once or twice a year.
